JL Cruze has established himself as one of the more consistent open trotters over the past few years. The now six-year-old son of Crazed captured the sport’s attention early in his four-year-old season when he won the finals of the Super Bowl, Singer and Shiaway St Pat stakes at the Meadowlands.
That year he won 16 of 21 starts for $629,000, set several records, and was awarded the Dan Patch for his division at the end of the season. He was purchased by his current owners, Ken Wood, Bill Dittmar Jr. and Stephen Iaquinta, at the end of his sophomore season for $37,000 and now sports $895,517 on his card lifetime.
Eric Ell trains the now six-year-old who will be making his 2017 debut on Saturday in the sixth qualifier of the morning against some real heavy hitters like Hannelore Hanover and Broadway Donna.

His younger brother, the four-year-old Muscle Hill son Hill Of A Colt, is also scheduled to qualify that morning, several hundred miles south at Pompano Park. It will be the second qualifier for the Gregg McNair pupil who had five wins and a second from eight starts last year at three.
A $24,000 yearling purchase, Hill Of A Colt is owned by McNair and Bloomingwood Farms of Harriston, Ontario.
Both Pompano and the Meadowlands’ qualifiers start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
